Take the First Step Into Aviation
Start your journey to becoming a pilot with a Discovery Flight at Rich Aviation Services. For just $145, you'll fly a Cessna 172 with a certified flight instructor and log your first lesson toward a Private Pilot Certificate.
What to Expect on Your Flight
-
Preflight Briefing
Your Discovery Flight begins with a tour of our flight school, training facilities, and aircraft fleet. Before takeoff, a certified flight instructor will introduce you to aviation safety, weather planning, aircraft systems, and flight operations. You'll also participate in a hands-on preflight inspection of the Cessna 172, just like student pilots do during professional flight training.
-
The Flight
Experience what it's like to be a pilot as you take the controls of a Cessna 172 with a certified flight instructor by your side. You'll participate in the pre-takeoff checklist, engine start, taxi, takeoff, and basic flight maneuvers including climbs, turns, descents, and airspeed control. After your hands-on flight lesson, you'll return to the airport for landing. Flight time is approximately 30 minutes.
-
Post-Flight Debrief
After landing, your instructor will debrief the flight, answer your questions, and log your first flight lesson. You'll also learn how to take the next step toward earning your Private Pilot Certificate.
Discovery Flights must be scheduled at least 48 hours in advance. A valid government-issued photo ID is required, and gift certificate holders should bring their certificate on the day of their flight.
Discovery Flight FAQs
Do I need to bring anything?
Yes. Please bring a valid government-issued ID. If you have a gift certificate, bring that along as well. Comfortable clothing and closed-toe shoes are recommended.
How long will the experience take?
The full Discovery Flight experience typically lasts about 2 hours, including the briefing, flight, and post-flight review.
Will this count toward my pilot certificate?
Absolutely. Your Discovery Flight is logged in your complimentary pilot logbook as your very first lesson toward a Private Pilot Certificate.
Can I give a Discovery Flight as a gift?
Yes! Discovery Flights make a perfect gift for birthdays, anniversaries, or anyone who has dreamed of flying. Gift certificates are available through our office.
Can I take pictures?
Yes. We’re happy to help you take photos on the ground before or after your flight. While in the air, your passenger or instructor can take photos, but as the pilot-in-training, your focus will be on flying!
Are there any age requirements?
There’s no minimum age to take a Discovery Flight. Younger participants may have limited involvement, and a parent or guardian must sign a waiver for minors.
Do I have to be a U.S. Citizen?
Yes. TSA regulations require proof of U.S. citizenship (passport, or driver’s license with birth certificate) for any type of flight training.
